The Strong Kids Campaign provides financial support to financially disadvantaged children, youth and families in our community so they too may participate in YMCA programs, services and memberships. Building healthy lifestyles, self-esteem and self-confidence in our children and youth is very important — and we take pride in our various programming designed to meet these goals. Requests for financial assistance increase every year—to meet these demands, and ensure no one is turned away, we host various fundraisers throughout the year and collect generous donations from Y members, Board of directors, staff members, community businesses and friends of the Y.

The Moose Jaw Family YMCA’s Strong Kids Campaign is looking forward to another successful year supporting local children, youth and families in our community.  We would like to invite YOU to join us in making a difference in the Moose Jaw community!

Last year we raised over $76,000 for the Campaign. This year, through various fundraising events, corporate donations and individual donations our goal is to raise $80,000. We increase our goal every year to meet the increasing need for financial assistance. At the YMCA we work very hard to ensure that no one is turned away due to an inability to pay.

The Moose Jaw YMCA was established in 1905 to provide spiritual and recreational opportunities for the young men moving to Moose Jaw from rural areas to work on the railroad. Since that time, the “Y” has grown and transformed to meet the changing needs of the community. A large number of sport and recreational teams, clubs and programs can trace their roots to the “Y”. Many of our local leaders and community volunteers attribute their leadership development, sense of community and passion for helping others back to their early involvement in the “Y” leader corps program.

The YMCA over our long history has always provided opportunities for youth and families to enhance and/or maintain their physical well being, health and wellness.

The Strong Kids Campaign was originally started for financially disadvantaged children to attend YMCA summer camp at no charge.  We have made a lot of changes and adapted the Strong Kids Campaign to meet the needs of our community. Not only do we continue to sponsor our children and youth, but we are now sponsoring whole families to assist them in participating in YMCA programs and memberships throughout the year.

We have also expanded our campaign and partnered with a variety of Community Outreach Organizations working together to provide a sense of belonging to a large diverse group of participants in a welcoming environment while encouraging physical activity. These organizations have been given the opportunity to utilize our programs and services at little or no cost to assist in improving participants’ lifestyle choices.  In addition to these partnerships, the YMCA has partnered with the Moose Jaw Child Action Committee and the Early Childhood Sub-Group to successfully organize and develop an Early Years Family Centre which has been planned over a 10 year time frame and has finally opened July 2009.

Our new Skills Development program has provided the opportunity to enhance employment skills in the workplace for 5 employees. Through this program these individuals are able to enhance their work skills with the goals of realizing full time employment.

Our organization strives to reach out to young people in our community in many different ways. Our staff has begun creating youth discussion tables within schools in Moose Jaw and surrounding communities to ensure that we are meeting the needs of youth within our community. Some programs that we have recently incorporated include our “Cool Pool” aquatic program for kids with physical disabilities; our YMCA “Active Kids” program focusing on health, cardiovascular fitness, muscular strength and endurance as well as nutrition.

The goal of our campaign is to sponsor as many children, youth and families as are needed in the community, building self-esteem, self-confidence and developing healthy lifestyles in a safe, fun and positive environment. Below is a link to our “Strong Kids Report for 2009” which will show you exactly who the YMCA was able to support last year as well as a link to our “Did You Know?” facts which outline some additional facts on our Campaign.

To continue our active role in this community we turn to our members, volunteers and friends of the “Y” to ask for their financial support. For just pennies a day you can help make a difference in the life of a child within your own community. 100% of the donations go directly into the Strong Kids Fund. Please help us make a difference in the lives of the children within Moose Jaw. Come into the Y today and speak to one of our Membership Services Representatives to make a donation – and remember – the YMCA is a registered charity, so all donations are tax deductible.
